Smart Parking PCN in Sainsbury's Milton Keynes

Hello,
I received a PCN whilst parked in the Sainsbury's car park in Milton Keynes city centre. The ticket looks like a receipt and clearly states it's from Smart Parking. I spoke to Sainsbury's staff to try and appeal it, but they say it's a Council Car Park. Speaking to the Council, they said it has nothing to do with them and there is no ticket under my car registration.
I've actually lost my ticket, but I wanted to know whether I need to pay this or if I can just ignore it. If I do pay it, it needs to be done by today in order to pay half the cost (14 days reduced charge).
Any advice please? Thanks in advance

Wait until you receive notification through the post from Smart (Notice to Keeper). Meantime read the NEWBIES FAQ sticky at the top of the forum index, one page back from here. It will give you a great deal of information on how to overcome this charge.
Don't be 'seduced' by any 'discount' offer - you want to pay nothing, and will be doing so if you do some reading and follow ongoing advice from us.
Smart Parking are one of the easiest PPCs to beat. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

Sainsburys and smart do not normally go together, most sainsburys use either Euro car parks, or Horizon.
this means that the car park may be owned by someone else.
Do any other retailers use the site/car park?
It may be worth getting a few photos of the signage
If it is Sainsburys car park then they have deliberately lied to youFrom the Plain Language Commission:

Hello,
I haven't posted before so I didn't realise this actually posted earlier. I've since had an update which I posted separately, but I'll include the message here.
Update:
Speaking to Sainsburys staff, they informed me this was a MK Council car park so I would need to take it up with them. I phoned them and they've informed me this isn't their car park and they have no record of a PCN issued to my car registration.
All of the signage in Sainsburys claims that the parking is managed by Smart Parking. I phoned them and they confirmed this is the case. However, they too have said they have no record of a ticket issued to my car registration.
I've asked both to confirm that there is no ticket in writing, but neither would agree to do so. I've heard of people that have had similar situations and received court orders several months later for ignoring the ticket even though they were under the impression there was no ticket.
Is there anything else I can do to ensure that I have myself covered in case I receive a further fee or court order in the future?
Thank you0 -
It's not a 'fee' or a 'fine' and Smart do not do court!
As ever, this is covered in the sticky thread at the top of this parking forum - which is why I wrote it. Sadly, last year it got silly as we could not keep up with all the ''help I have got a private parking ticket, what do I do?'' threads so I wrote a sticky thread BEGGING newbies to 'read these FAQS first'.
Smart almost always just cancel when they get sent the appeal template from the NEWBIES thread, and if not then the sticky tells you how to win at POPLA and explains what that is...PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
