  • Yes they will have an impact, and yes the effect will diminish over time.

When you say that he has cleared most of his unsecured debt, do you mean that he is now not in arrears on anything?

He should definitely seek out a mortgage broker with expertise in dealing with people with adverse history.
  • Hi jamesb

He hasn't had any arrears since early 2012. He now owes around 4k on a 0% card but nothing else he earns 50k so it's more than manageable.

He accepts responsibility but it seems unfortunate that three year old issues will have an impact todAy!
  • Hi - I know it seems so unfair that these issues are still around but sadly, that is what happens.

Ensure he sees an independent adviser and if he pays more as he cant get the best deal it will only be fora few years.

    Good luck

  • If he earns that much, could he consider paying off the card and just using it for monthly expenses, paying it off in full every month?

I was refused a deal over one late payment from five years previously. You never know what they will consider relevant.

It might be worth posting this question on the Mortgages & Endowments board as a lot of mortgage brokers frequent that board and can provide some assistance on what is possible.

However he will most likely need to go to a mortgage broker to find the best option for his circumstances and it would be best if he provides them with a copy of his credit report so they can see exactly what they are dealing with.
    Starting Mortgage Balance: £264,800 (8th Aug 2014)
    Current Mortgage Balance: £269,750 (18th April 2016)
  • Thanks guys, I will post the question in mortgage board. Not sure if I am allowed to post the same question in 2 different forums so I will delete this one just in case

Thanks for all of the advice!
