Day 1 - Journey To My Happier and Healthier Life

I have just turned 29 and I am currently trying to clear my debt.
I am not in serious debt (I am not struggling to make payments) but I know what I have is too much. I have never missed a payment on any credit agreement and I dont have an overdraft but I do have loans and credit cards.

I am wanting to have no debt other than my mortgage by the time I am 35 (plus I am wanting to be making overpayments on that). I have just moved my debt onto a 0% credit card for the next 33 months. I have £4500 total on that card at the moment which I am embarrassed about. I have £13,300 on a personal loan for 9% APR which I took out a year ago to consolidate my debts (I know I am stupid) I am not wanting to do that again as it is clear I can't be trusted.

Part of my problem stems from when I changed job roles and took a 10k paycut which was 7k more than expected (long story) I kinda continued living the same lifestyle but using store cards etc to live up to it.

I currently work full time on rotation which is opposite to my husband so we don't need to pay for childcare for our 3 children.

In the long term I am wanting to return to studying for a better job and maybe look into moving abroad. I want to spend more time with my family, as a family and not have my kids quiz me on who's turn it is to go to work. Apart from 25 days a year they don't get to see their parents together apart from an hour a day (if that). I would love to take my family to America in the future and to make some huge improvements in the house, such as an attic conversion.

As someone who has suffered from depression/anxiety in the past I am wanting to avoid going down the road again and I know getting my debt in order will help with this.

  • Thank you both :)

I am wanting to put nothing on credit this Christmas which includes catalogues, I feel really positive as I have spent my reward points on Littlewoods and paid cash for the remaining balance rather than just apply it to my account.
I also used my nectar points on ebay which has saved me some money. Definitely feeling positive that I can finish Christmas with no further debt.

I have got some good bargains recently, thanks to this site. The offer for canvas' on the main site has resulted in a couple further gifts crossed off my list with close to £100 saved on the normal price.
