Will I have to take out a new mortgage after the death of my wife ?

Hi,

My wife recently died and I was wondering what happens to the mortgage now as we were jointly on the mortage (although I was the only party who paid it each month)? Will I have to take out a different mortgage or will my wife's name just be removed from the mortgage documents?

Your priority should be to speak your lender and explain the situation. The options available to you will be determined by your personal circumstances.

I disagree here. The OP's priority should be to grieve for his wife, continue to make the mortgage payments as normal then contact the lender when he's good and ready.

The OP's question was in relation to the mortgage. It was to this that my response was phrased.

    Hi

There's no need to rush into doing anything, just pay the mortgage as normal until you are ready to sort this out.

If the property is held as joint tenants (which is the most usual), it'll simply a case of them removing your wife's name from the mortgage. So you'll carry on with exactly the same mortgage as you have now.

It is slightly more complicated if the property is held as tenants in common, as it is possible for your wife to have left her share of the property to someone else in her will.

Your lender will be able to advise regarding the tenancy and how they would proceed with a tenants in common case. Even then, it's not usually necessary to remortgage, unless you wanted to.

Try not to worry about changing the names on the mortgage, as it is normally very straightforward indeed.

    Best wishes to you
