How Many Holiday on Credit?

We now always book and pay a bit off each month until the holiday comes that way it is paid off and we can save some spending money too as well as buy some new clothes.
Op if you book it on your card try and pay as much off as possible before you go.0 -
As most are posting on here, the total amount of debt I had, included a few holidays, they take years to pay off, in a lot of cases, and you usually haven't repaid the last one, before your off again.
Its a bad idea, any credit card debt is a bad idea really.
Not been away anywhere since 2011, last time was to Paris, paid for by earned money, I refuse to have a credit card now, even though lots of hotels insist on having one to make a booking, it can be done with a debt card, just as easily.
It is habit, the "live today, pay tomorrow" attitude, unfortunately tomorrow comes all to quickly, I bet a lot of people who are in some kind of DMP will be able to list a few Holidays they are still paying for.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. There is nothing wrong with using a 0% credit card to pay for a luxury holiday...until something goes wrong with the repayment. The holiday is then forgotten and all what it is replaced with is stress and sleepless nights.I guess I am just wanting to give my family something to look forward to that I am willing to get into more debt just to do it.
Nothing will be as valuable to the family then avoiding the stress of debts. Many parents think that they are keeping things away from their kids, but kids are very perceptive, and all the snapping, lack of attention, having to say no because of anxiety can have a big impact on them.0 -
Just to add, the best you can give your child is something to look forward to. So if you can tell your kids that you are planning on taking them away, but can only do so when the money is saved, they will get into the spirit of saving. It then makes it so much easier when they ask for things and you say no because you are putting the money towards the trip. Then when the time comes to go, the sense of achievement makes it even more enjoyable. All then of course, you've taught your children about the value of savings in the mix.0

You don't have to spend £1000s on a holiday to have a fantastic time and create lots of wonderful memories. Some of our best holidays have been cheap and cheerful UK camping holidays, the kids love them!Total Starting Debt August 2014- £38,061
Current Debt- £3600
Mortgage Offset Savings- £600
90.5% paid off so far...0 -
I had completely paid off one of my credit cards (still had the other to go but down to about 2K, loan and overdraft paid off) and because I didn't want OH to miss out on a holiday - my debt not his - we booked on the previously empty credit card.
Well in advance, had a plan to pay it off before we went. OH paid his bits but I of course did not. Instead what I had done was opened the flood gates to spend on that card until I got close to the limit again.
I would book another holiday on a credit card, but only for the additional protection and only if I had the cash in my account to pay it off there and then.
Really don't recommend it0 -
Hi
doesn't matter what you buy using your credit card, as long as you have the money to pay for it before you purchase it.
Deduct the CC purchase from your 'day by day tracking' of your bank account, annotate it with the CC you have used. Make sure you have set up an automated DD with CC to pay off in full the amount due every month.
If you have not the money available, defer the purchase until you have.
Set up a regular transfer from current account to high interest account for the Value/12 (if its one holiday a year) or Value/6 (if its 2 hols and so on). You will gain in compound interest which will provide additional funds for other uses (more savings for pension etc)Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.0 -
I have always paid cash for our holidays but then again we usually go on city breaks for 4 - 5 days and spend max of £250 pp for flights and accommodation. I also agree with the person above who said that some of their best holiday's were camping in the UK; for the first 20 years of my life we always spent 2 weeks in a caravan in Wales and those were the best holidays a child could have!Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20170

All my childhood holidays in the late 60's and 70's were camping ones and all but 1 were in the UK often in Devon/Cornwall, the Lakes or Yorkshire. Also great fun!0 -
Hi Everyone,
I am new to posting on these forums although I have been a visitor on many occasions.
I am interested to see how many people holiday on credit?
I know this may seem odd but I am hoping to go on holiday to Florida in 2016 but I am wanting to clear some of my debt before I go back and it might only be possible if I credit card the flights. (on a 0% interest only card)
I will be posting my debt balances to my signature once I figure out how too. I am sure having the figures there makes it motivating to see the amount decrease
At least the surcharge for booking with credit cards might help some people control the debt better by using a debit card instead0
