Since the Danish Kitchen shut we've tried a few other cafes in York, just for a cuppa and a toasted t-cake, but they are either expensive, cramped, unwelcoming or all 3!
Any suggestions?

Spurriergate Centre on the corner of Coney Street is pretty nice.
You could always try one of the little cupcake shops with cafe near st William's college, close to the Minster. Good coffee.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
If you go on tripadvisor and search for york there are 48 cafes reviewed. I would work down that list.
You're going to get a better recommendation from that site than you are on here!0 -

TA was my first port of call, always take reviews with a pinch of salt... but nothing beats a personal recommendation.
Anyway, after today's visit, I can highly recommend Castle Tea Rooms on CastleGate - which is parallel to CopperGate - just 2 mins from Clifford's Tower.0 -

What about Betty's Tea Rooms?
Haven't been there but I remembered it from when I was there a few years back and people then were queuing outside (apparently booking is recommend)

I think Betty's is a bit too upmarket for what the OP is after.0 -

Wow, patronising much...?
I don't live far from York - we also have a Betty's here (narrows it down, eh). Over priced tourist magnet for suckers - two dozen camera-laden Orientals queueing outside in York yesterday, says it all. I wouldn't walk the 5 minutes to ours, so sure as hell not going to drive to York to go there!! Just wanted a nice, sensibly priced cuppa in nice surroundings, which we got at Castle TeaRooms. :T0 -

I was not patronising you at all.
You said you wanted to go to a cafe for a cuppa and a tea cake and used to go to the Danish kitchen.
You are clearly after a similar sort of cafe which is nothing like Betty's!
I'm not sure why you are bringing orientals up. It lessens you as a person.0
