Android only gets BBC desktop website!

Bit of an oddity here as people usually complain about not getting the desktop version of a site on their mobiles. In my bookmarks I have https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather and on the start page I have m.bbc.co.uk/weather/ng18 ,but both now revert to the World https://www.bbc.com site . I haven't altered anything and have no idea why this has changed. I'm running Opera Mini via Gingerbread.

I'm guessing that the bbc website 'thinks' you aren't in the UK.

I've seen something like this on a WiFi connection I use, which for some reason (perhaps due to the Internet Service Provider) many websites think is in France, so I get bbc.com on that connection.

How are you connecting to the internet? Are there alternative methods you could use to connect to see if eg. another WiFi connection made a difference?

IIRC it could also be down to the browser or browser settings, I can't remember if Opera does it, but I vaguely remember some browsers for tablets and phones used to use a technology that would route a lot of traffic through specific servers were it was compressed to reduce the data required (speeding up the loading of the pages on slow connections, and reducing the data costs to the mobile user on sites that didn't have a mobile page).

If it is doing that any website will detect the location of the server that is doing the data compression rather than your location.

You are both correct, I believe Opera compresses that data in Norway. But this doesn't explain why I didn't have any problems with it until very recently. I'm also still connecting with 3 mobile broadband, but I'll check next time I'm in a free wi-fi area.
