How do YOU wear a gilet?

Options
I realise that this probably seems like a particularly daft question, but I've just recently bought my very first gilet from the charity shop. It's a chocolate brown puffa-style, with ribbing around the waist and neck, and can be zipped all the way up the neck. It has a detachable hood.

Do you wear them over quite thin long-sleeved tops or do you find them OK over thicker fleeces etc? What about if it rains? I think I may have left it a bit late, that it's too cold now and I won't get much use out of it until spring. Maybe I can wear it indoors, I do like that it doesn't feel very bulky.

I don't think that it looks particularly attractive on a ... erm ... larger "front-chested" lady like myself:o, but that probably isn't the point of them.

  • I have a burgundy puffa style one from New Look, with a big fur-trimmed hood.

I wear mine with thin jumpers, or sometimes thin long sleeved tops. I get very warm quickly so I don't like wearing anything too thick underneath it but I have been known to wear a heavier jumper when it is VERY cold.

I'm not bothered about the rain as long as it isn't too heavy, the gilet itself is quite waterproof so it's fine for me.

I have a black one with no hood and I wore it with a thin white sweatshirt underneath, teamed with boots and jeans.

I am a cold soul:(, so I wear one (I have several down & feather ones) over a thin jumper or fleece (when ordinary mortals are just wearing a long sleeved T shirt:rotfl:), or on days like yesterday which was sunny, but a really cold wind I layered up with a fine cashmere V neck, under a lightweight fleece top with my reversible pink/cream gilet over the top, nice jeans, trainers and a matching scarf as I was out from noon until dusk and it goes really cold when the sun goes down.

They are so versatile and I think can look good with jeans or more formal trousers and nice boots. (I live in a small country town and it is a lot less formal than town/city though)

Teehee. Will keep that in mind!
  • I have a black one too with no hood.
I wear it lots- with jeans with a long sleeve tshirt or thin jumper, and with trousers and a jumper as outdoor clothing on a work day (we have a smart / casual dress code). I add a scarf to dress it up a bit. We also live fairly rurally though so it's easier to get away with something like that.

I find it feels less restrictive around my arms than a jacket.
  • I have a couple of fake fur ones and wear them with sweatshirts underneath on cold days, any type of jumper but preferably tight fitting and even t shirts, they are really good when driving as they don't make you feel bulky or restricted, dd is a horse rider and wears hers all the time even over other jackets :)
  • So I wore mine this morning over a thin thermal fleece type thing. It was quite mild here, my arms felt a bit cold a few times, but not enough to regret my choice of clothing. The lack of bulk is nice. A fiver well spent, methinks.
  • I dont see the point in them unless its for cycling.Obviously a persons arms are going to get cold so therefore they would be better off with a coat or jacket.
    Also they look really naff.
  • Gilet? Is that a posh name for a body warmer?
  • Yeah, its the new name to try to rebrand them away fom naffness.
