Mortgages for people who have lived overseas

Hello,
I was surprised my bank, Nationwide, told me I could not apply for a mortgage because my UK employer sent me to work in France for two years. They said they only lend to people who have been UK resident for the last 3 years.
Will this be the same with all mortgage providers or do people know of banks that will be less fussy about that? I have had the same UK employer for the last 10 years, so to me it seems a very odd rule because financially I am in an identical position to where I would be if I had not been seconded overseas.
Thanks,
Mark

Its not the same for all lenders but you will find a lot of lenders do have something similar.
I did a mortgage for someone about 4 months ago who had not been in the UK for 2 years and I had quite a few who were saying they would not lend. Before making any applications you need to check the criteria or speak to a broker.
There will be lenders that do not have this requirement (at high street rates) but not all.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
