Cost vs value

Hi there

We have a price limit of £40 per adult for Christmas. However, I have managed to bag a bargain and get an item at the third of it's store value, therefore being well within budget.

I feel like I'm in a bit of a strange pickle this year though - do you think the £40 limit should be based on the price paid for an item or the 'value' of the item. (I know I could give free home-made items with more 'value' but that's not my point at the minute). How would you feel if someone received a gift that was obviously more expensive? Would you care? Am I just worrying for nothing or could this be a problem?

A vision without a plan is just a dream.

  • Firstly, congratulations on getting a bargain. As for price per adult - you have managed to keep to the limit - and would have paid more had it not been discounted (so it is of equal value). The adult concerned would not know of your discount - so stop worrying - it is one present off of your list and some extra cash in your pocket. Imagine how much you could save if you manage that with all of your planned purchases. x
  • If you bought three things for £10.00 on a 3 for 2 offer, you would give each person one of the gifts and not worry that one of them was "free"....try to see this in the same way :) If you buy something for £7 that was originally £21 then well done you, squirrel away the extra, they will never know what you did or didn;t pay :)

I normally set a budget per person but try and buy presents under that and save the difference

However, you may need to make sure the gifts are perceived as equal. For example, last year, I managed to buy sil1 a bottle of perfume for £20 instead of £40. However, sil2 present was more expensive at £25, but looked much cheaper than sil1 present, so I bought her an extra gift so 'looked' equal value.
