Looking for a decent Road Bike

My distance between home to work is 10 miles round journey. Road Bike seems the way to go but they are expensive. As a beginner can someone suggest a decent road bike within £300.

Christmas round the corner expecting good deals hopefully.

5 miles each way, what sort of roads?
  • Halfords Carrera range are decent as is their Boardman range, although they tend to be on the more expensive side. Have heard positive things about the Decathlon B'Twin range as well.
  • 1. Cycle to work scheme any use for you?

    2. Evans offer 'double up' value on any Tesco vouchers. I don't much like them as a retailer, to be honest, but if you happen to have a big fat lot of Tesco vouchers lying round, they will get you very good value on a bike (or bike-related) purchases at the moment - they're pretty keen on prices anyway, and this makes them twice as good.

10 mile road trip doesnt warrant a decent roadbike, which you cant get for £300 anyway. Just look at mtbs/hybrids in your budget and go with what you like the look of. If you aren't putting in serious miles taking the time to numb your bum for a skinny saddle, then you will find a roadbike very uncomfortable. At least with an mtb you wont need to lycra up either
  • Also bear in mind that a hybrid will be much more practical for commuting: easier to carry luggage (not on your back!) as well as to fit mudguards and lights.

How about a Dawes Discovery 301 Ladies?
Would tick my boxes for a bike to do the job. 11.5kg
In the category of fast hybrids.

My journey is in Central London. People advice for daily road commute it has to be road bike. I am tempted to buy a boardman which is on offer(15% off) in Halfords. Are they better than Carrera?

Durable Component is what I am after rather than model and year.
  • If you're determined to buy new look at Decathlon - their Triban range is pretty good for the price. 2nd hand will get you more for your money though - and probably just after Christmas will be best!

Are you just going to be using the bike for commuting, or will leisure riding and shopping trips need to be taken into account? These *can* be done on a road bike with a pannier rack, but a town bike will do the utility stuff better and only be very slightly slower on a 5 mile commute (5 minutes difference). Again, 2nd hand will get you more for your money.

I just want to make it clear I am NOT saying you shouldn't get a road bike, and I'm certainly not looking at your username and thinking 'girl - should have a ladies bike'. I have a road bike (for commuting) AND utility bike for the other stuff, which is great if you have the space and desire for more bikes, but if I could only have 1, I'd keep the utility bike as it's a jack of all trades for me. Other people will have different preferences though.
    It's only numbers.
  • My head has been turned by the 13 cyclocross bike on the Halfords site. I can't post links yet, sorry.
Easy to fit a rack to and good components for the price.
