Someone using our telephone number

Apologies of this is the wrong section, but I thought if anyone knew the answer it would be the regulars here.

It appears that someone, possibly more than one person , has used my telephone number in relation to obtaining finance. We started getting calls about 4 days ago, thinking they were just nuisance ones we basically hung up on them at first. However they started coming quite quickly, 6-7 a day and we started asking questions, at first they asked about two names, both female but all the latest ones have been for the same man. The companies phoning are different as well, some will tell us who they are others will not, they are not always completely clear who they are but we think one was Pennywise finance and the other something like Wake Up finance.

We are now telling them that we think someone is trying to commit some sort of fraud and they promise to remove our telephone number from their records and advise their fraud department. The two latest ones this morning though were different, the person phoning refused to say who they were and just insisted we told them where to find this man, and then hung up when we continued to ask them to state their names.

My question is if someone has my telephone number, is it a problem for us? So far this is all been by phone, one of the companies told us that the number was used as part of a loan application last week, so it is early days, but wouldn't tell us what address they had associated and of course we would not give them ours.

Get a hold of your statutory credit reports would be my first suggestion.

Thank you, I will do that once I work out how.

I've just had another call, this time from Quickloans who say the amount requested is £1000, and were also kind enough to give us the post code of the applicant (which does not match our postcode)

Gosh this person must be desperate for a loan, two more companies (one called twice to make sure we weren't the person they wanted) in the past 2 hours. We just keep telling them all that it looks like someone is making fraudulent applications and to report it to their fraud department.

  • Just to try and put your mind at rest as it might not necessarily be fraud...

Looking at the type of companies contacting you isn't it also possible that the loan applicant only applied for one loan, mis-typed their telephone number and now those contact details have been passed on to lots of other shoddy loan companies/brokers etc??

Goodness that's a thought- if the poor bloke ended up with a loan broker he could be racking up fees for all these companies phoning me.
