Small crafty business - register as self employed or for a tax return?

My husband, quite by accident really has turned a little hobby into a small money maker. Initially he was just selling a few items here and there to friends of friends but it's suddenly accelerated, I guess with Christmas on its way.

He has a full time job and does this in his spare time. Does he need to register as self employed or can he put it through a self assessment tax return?

Thanks in advance and hopefully I've posted in the right area of the forum!

Is he already submitting self-assessment returns?
How much does he expect to earn from his hobby business in this tax year?

No he isn't currently submitting self assessments. I think probably around £2k max.

Yes he needs to register as self employed and yes he needs to declare this on the self assessment form.
