It usually tells you on the band round the wool what size of needle to use. As a general rule the thicker the wool the larger the needle.
Ravelry is a good site -patterns and advice. You have to register but it's free.0 -
If you're following a pattern it will usually tell you what size needles and what weight of wool to use. Otherwise as Thirzah said, use the size recommended on the label.
I heartily endorse the recommendation to join https://www.ravelry.com. It's crammed full of everything a knitter could ever want, including almost 200 000 patterns, and user groups for everyone from rank beginners to designers to people who like to spin their dog's hair.

There is a knitters thread. We could do with some new members not many people post but ask a question and they all come out.
