Beware of the Stilton!

Hi all, just home from Tescos, looked at nice festive Stilton, sliced half round, @ £16 per kilo meanwhile, in the cheese fridge, exactly the same Tesco own brand stilton being sold in wedges @£9.68 per kilo, Yes, every little helps at Christmas and £6.32 extra per kilo will help pay the bosses bonuses. :j

I think you always pay over the top for those pre-packed 'cheese boards' too. Better making your own selection really.
Something to look out for just after xmas is the supermarkets flogging off stilton cheap - I got a load from Sainsburys for about £4 a kilo. Froze it and used it for soup during the year:)

Lidl stilton came out top of the Good Housekeeping Christmas taste test and I'd imagine very competitively priced too.

    Everything is more expensive prepacked.

    From Vegetables to Cheese, etc.

Personally I am not surprised in the revelation.:)

Aldi Stilton - excellent quality, excellent price.

M&S Stilton - excellent quality, hugely higher price.

And the reason for the excellent quality of both Stiltons? Both come from the same supplier - Long Clawson Dairy, near Melton Mowbray.

Next time they have the Sainsburys cheeseboards with the bottles of port, cider, beer etc or a pot of chutney - look at the UB date, make a note and 2-4 days before this date (early NY), buy them up for cheap as the UB is for just one cheese. I bought a set with three different cheeses and a pot of TTD chutney for £2.50 - which is the same cost as the chutney alone! It had a May date and the other two cheeses were end Jan - early March.

Both prices apply to pre-packed cheese, just that the "festive" stilton is more expensive, I didnt check the deli, as you say, the cut to order is probably another price.
