NT code

Hi all,

I was made BR in June but am still not on the NT coding. Clarke Willmott asked me to speak to HMRC about it in September but still noting has happened. Should I be worried about it or just carry on as normal?

    HI

don't worry - I went BR in June as well and only received the letter from HMRC on Friday telling me that they have now instructed my employers to instigate the NT code. Up until now I haven't paid Clarke Wilmott anything but as long as Payroll have done the NT code this month I'll start sending them my IPA payments until the end of the financial year. I did get the feeling that Clarke Wilmott didn't believe me when I kept telling them it hadn't been done, and I even called my OR who said not to worry as it can take months. If it helps, call Clarke Wilmott and ask for their email address etc to send them a copy of your most recent payslip which will prove that it's not been done yet.

By the way, CW asked me to speak to HMRC too, but when I tried HMRC said they wouldn't/ couldn't discuss it with me as I hadn't made the request for the NT code - so I just had to wait.

As said, it's really not your problem to go chasing this, and until the code is applied - if it ever is - CW can't insist on any NT payments.

Seems to take a while - I also went BR in June and NT code wasn't applied until the following October. Its kind of academic anyway because HMRC will give all the tax paid by you to the OR. I sometimes wonder if its worth the cost of the administration to collect it from the BR when HMRC will simply write the OR a cheque.

At one time the NT code payments helped finance the IS....I always thought of it as 'robbing Peter to pay Paul?'
