Vegetable Trolleys

I was looking at getting a freestanding vegetable trolley, something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Tier-Kitchen-Fruit-Vegetable-Rack-On-Wheels-Deep-Storage-Stand-Cart-Trolley/231052991913?_trksid=p2141725.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3D6cade7df5fd6406a9eee33b2c0a896af%26pid%3D100204%26prg%3D20140407115239%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D30%26sd%3D121394646347

However, I have had them in the past and because there is no tray at the bottom I find that the outer leave of onions and garlic tends to fall on the ground.

So what do other people do about this?

Thanks

line the trays with newspaper or keep problem veg in bags (not plastic)
Potatoes need to be kept out of the light anyway
  • Thats why its on wheels.
Wheel it out, vacuum whenever you are doing the rest of the kitchen anyway, wheel it back. Easy peasy.
Far less mess than a drawer full of soil and scrag ends that only gets cleared once in a blue moon.

Line it with paper or tinfoil. Easy to lift out and empty when necessary.

I found that style of trolley quite flimsy, the hooks for the shelves kept coming out / lose. Hopefully the one you've linked is a bit sturdier.

Do you have a place spotted to store it? Is it cool and dark? Loads of veg n; fruit like those conditions and some like bananas shouldn't be stored with other things.

Still really handy things to be able to wheel everything out at your finger tips.
  • I line mine with newspaper and put an extra sheet of paper over the top of potatoes to keep them as dark as possible :)

I had a friend with a rustic looking kitchen and she kept all her veg in an big earthenware plant pot (without soil) in the corner of the kitchen, it looked really good and she said it helped keep them fresh.

I keep mine in cardboard boxes in a cool dark cupboard. I scrounge the type of boxes that things like peppers and aubergines come in, from the local greengrocer. They act as stacking trays for different veg and things like apples, allows a bit of air flow round them and if they get dirty I just replace them.

I used to have a wire rack and lined it with newspaper to stop the debris falling out. The cats used to take the potatoes and such out though, to play with. It was when I found a cat asleep in one of the tiers and the veg all over the floor that I decided to get rid of it.

Thanks very much for all your replies.

Using newspaper is a good idea, but I just came across this fruit and veg cushion which I might try:

I have one of those green vegetable cushions in the fridge drawer, and find it helps my veggies keep longer; any condensation sinks through and collects under the cushion, and the veggies stay dry. Obviously I have to clean the drawer regularly but I'd be doing that anyway.

I don't have space for a veggie trolley, so I keep most veggies in the fridge; fruit is in bowls in the lounge (for easy grabbing when DH gets the munchies;) ) and spuds are in a plastic basket lined with newspaper in the cupboard.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • I have a wheeled veg trolley like the one shown and found it was rather on the wobbly side, so I now only use it in the kitchen for odds and ends as its just too flimsy for anything weighty.

I have a couple of dark- lined veggie drawstring bags that I bought from Bettaware and found these excellant for spuds and green veg etc.My fruit I keep in my conservatory ,especially at this time of the year as its cool and it all keeps very well. Some stuff like mushrooms go in a brown paper bag in the salad drawer in the fridge and lettuce I have in a bowl-shaped crisper that I also got from bettaware a couple of years ago and living on my own it takes me about 10 days to eat through a lettuce but the crisper keeps it great.I was told never to cut lettuce with a knife as it makes it go 'brown' at the cut edges and I have always torn bits off then chopped up on a plate seperately.Celery I wrap in tinfoil and it keeps for several weeks with no problem also in the salad drawer of the fridge.
Still my little wire trolley is useful as I keep my dustpan and brush on the bottom shelf dusters on the next one up ,black bin bags on the next one up and my slippers where I can always find them on the top shelf :):) not what its meant for but great for storing things where I can find them easily
