    45p is what has been determined it costs to run a car and that is not far off once you factor in the fuel, maintenance, breakdown, tax, insurance and depreciation.

    work it out for a decent reliable car and see what your costs will be any less you are subsidising the employer.


    15p is the rate accepted when they provide the car or give an decent allowance.

  • Put it this way....

    No company I have ever worked for has required employees to use their own vehicle for company use. They either supply a company vehicle for regular travellers or a hire car for less frequent travellers. Where an employee chooses with the company's agreement to use their own vehicle, the full 45p is paid.

    Even the 45p does not cover the actual cost of running a car privately. I think that was estimated by the AA some time ago as about 53p per mile, depending on the vehicle.

    You do realise that using a private vehicle for company use requires you to have business class insurance and for carrying goods it would need cover for commercial travelling - the cost of which can be horrendous.

    Think twice about a company that treats employees like this, OP.

    or in my company's case, pool cars. A couple of times a car wasn't available at the last minute or I refused due to safety issues (e.g. bare tyre). When they said I could take my own car I had to say no as I wasn't insured. Even though I was a junior systems analyst I was still meeting reasonably senior managers, so they normally let me borrow one of the seniors' cars. But it wasn't up to me to subsidise the company or break the law.

    One issue to watch out for with low mileage allowances is the reluctance to allow overnight when traveling.

    This can mean long hours getting to and from places rather than overnights and optimising travel distance and time.

    Research the company as well as others in the sector for issues.
