Expensing a Funeral for a bankrupt person

Can anybody who has gone the "paupers grave" route having to bury a bankrupt person please explain how much the grant is for the burial or cremation of a bankrupt person, what is covered and what is not and how the funeral directors will deal with the problem.

I think your best bet would be to contact either the local authority, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Social Services or the Benefit Agency. You might also be able to find some info on the internet. Our usual enquiries here are about how to go bankrupt, the effects etc. This is the first time I've seen such a query as yours - maybe someone else might have some other suggestions. :)

I'm afraid the grant system depends on your income if you're next of kin. If you're on certain benefits a grant will be available, not repayable unless the estate of the deceased has enough to cover repayment. In any case the grant is about £850 which is half the cost of the average funeral. Our hearts go out to you.
