Temporary work ideas?

Options
Hi,
Huge apologies if I am writing this in the wrong place.
I work as a family worker, but my job is only term time. It is now the holidays, I have no money and the job I had been offered as a nanny has fallen through!!
Does anyone have any ideas of work I could do in the next 6 weeks?
I've joined an employment agency but so far no joy! Really it needs to be cash in hand, or to be able to start immediately? I see that some people do surveys and mystery shoppers - how do they work and is it worth the money?

Thanks for your help

Neither surveys or mystery shopper would give you a 'proper' income if any one dis-agrees please say so and you probably wouldn't get any money until your after term-time job starts again you've done the right thing signing up to an agency, but at the moment I can't think of anything else you could do apart from maybe try asking round kids clubs, restaurants or pubs to see if they have anything...

...sorry I'm not much help, good luck

    Hi sopoor,

Register with lots of agencies - can't do any harm!

Do you have any friends with businesses that you could work for?

I agree with HelzBelz, surveys and mystery shopping can only really provide minimal income. I have been doing ms for several months and probably made £30 over the whole time! x
    Gone ... or have I?

Thank you. I will keep trying. I'm finding that agencies are saying that it will take several weeks for them to sort out paperwork, ie references etc before they can give me work. I would have done this beforehand, except I thought I had a job to go to.
Never mind, who knows what's round the corner.

    Thanks again

have you thought of catering agencys? there is usually plenty of work for casual waiting staff this time of year for weddings etc. Last time i did it was many years ago, but im sure they give you some training if you don't have experience

    Hi,

I registered with mystery shopper website and a surveys website and as yet i have never been allocated a shopping experience and i have completed several surveys over several months and i have probably only banked up about £20. So hats off for trying but i wouldnt recommend. Do you not have anything that you could sell at car boots or on ebay? Maybe you could look in the charity shops to see if you can find anything worth selling on. The pound shop often sells items that i see again on ebay with a few quid added on, thats maybe worth a look.
Good luck with what ever you decide to do. X

If your job is with your local council, then it might be worth asking if they have anything going: as your employer they would already have your references and CRB checks on file. Playschemes are sometimes desperate for staff, for example, and if it's with your 'regular' employer then they will hopefully be able to accept your current CRB check.

Would you consider tutoring? SOmething like helping kids with basic maths and literacy? You can ask £20 an hour, work from home, and you'd be surprised how many parents want to give their children a start before the new school year. You can advertise in the paper or in shop windows.

Keeping an eye on the classified section of community newspapers helps too - I've one friend who makes £20 a day taking an old person out to the shops/messages etc.

many colleges are desperate for staff this time of year to deal with course enquiries, might be worth ringing round. Its something they usually offer to staff friends and family so not usually advertised, but you might get lucky if they are short handed.

    Thanks everyone,
You've all come up with some great ideas. Sue, that's a great idea about the council, I will phone the HR Dept and see if they have anything. And by a stroke of luck, a colleague has got me 2 days youth work so I am very pleased!

    Thanks

There you are then. There are BOUND to be youth and children's activities going on over the summer, and hopefully more youth work available if you're up for it!

BTW, I would pursue ALL the local playschemes and holiday clubs, many of them will be open again in the October holiday so if you get referenced and on their books now you may get work then, assuming you'll still need it.
