There are several Eastern European shops in this area but I wouldn't know which if any are polish. Does anyone know how to tell which country's produce the shop is selling?0

Give it a try. I think a lot of Brits are a bit wary of anything they aren't used to. I found the Polish shops a good while back and now am in there most weeks. There's always something new to try - and it's almost always superior in flavour to the nearest local equivalent.
I find it really sad, like the OP, that the supermarkets have got our own producers turning out bland junk which is only made to look good and fit neatly on the shelves.
Their opinion of your average UK consumer must be appallingly low.

Also, if they're called Polski Sklep, that's a pretty big clue that they're Polish
Totally agree about the nice-looking but bland muck in the supermarkets. They must either think we're idiots or they're stuck in the days before many of us had any alternatives.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j

Thought I'd resurrect this with a last, parting shot.
I bought some bog standard ham from the deli counter at the Polish shop last Friday whilst my wife by accident got some 'finest cured Yorkshire' stuff from the Waitrose deli. That'll teach us to communicate better.
Prices virtually identical.
Our children and their families stayed with us over the weekend.
Result: all the Polish product gone and 'that tasteless ham' still gracing the fridge...0 -
