Due to be made redundant but is there hope?

I am currently on notice and due to be made redundant in January 2015. A position has become available which is a lower grade and only 20hrs as opposed to the 35 hrs I currently work. I have been informed that I am ineligible to apply for the post as it is part time and that the post be offered to a part time worker instead even thought part of the duties of this new post are duties which I currently undertake as detailed in my job description. I have taken advice from my union who say that the stance the company are taking is correct. It seems to go against equal opportunities for all as I know I am the most experienced for this postion as no else knows the post. Where do I stand?

Unfortunately in the dole queue!
If the union believe the company stance is correct, that does not sound encouraging. Even if you found a way to apply, the employer is not obliged to hire you.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
As this seems to be one of the comparatively rare occasions where management and union agree I don't think there is anything you can do.0

They have to see if there are any equivalent roles you can be offered. As a lower grade part time post, then it's just not equivalent to your current role.
From the company's perspective it probably looks as if you want the part time role to keep you with a wage coming in while you look for a better (full time, higher pay, similar to your redundant post) position elsewhere. Whereas they're going to be looking for someone who's more likely to stay, and isn't resenting the fact that they've lost a good job for a less good one.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I am happy with the part time role with regards to hours and pay. I have no debts. I am 50 yrs old with a young grand-daughter and a 78 yr old mother, so the reduced hours would suit. I was told about the post offering me some hope. However as a part timer under threat of redundancy too has applied for the vacancy I have been told my application will not now be considered.0
