How to clean a mattress

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to clean a mattress - just general grubbiness rather than any particular stain?

I've just bought a new bed, so looking to get rid of my old one, including the mattress.

I don't have any way of transporting the mattress to the tip without hiring someone to do it, so I'm hoping someone will take it for free, but would be embarrassed to give the mattress away in its current state!

The mattress, and bed, are in an ok condition - perfectly usable, but don't owe me anything, so just looking for someone to take them off my hands!

I've used a mattress protector for the past year, so it is just a general scrub it needs, so looking forward to hearing if anyone has any ideas of the best way to do that.

Thanks in advance!

I always use the upholstery tool of my Vax to wash it with. Don't forget to use plain water to rinse with. (For some reason Vax don't think this is necessary, but I find it always leaves items sticky.)

I was going to add the question "has anyone ever tried a vax on their mattress?" to this thread and you've answered that for me :)
    Thanks jk0
I presume it didn't leave watermarks or anything?
This always happens if I try to clean mine by hand and they just spread and spread :o

Oh, as long as you do the whole thing & not just bits of it, you shouldn't have any problem with water marks.

Gumtree freebies section is an excellent solution to not being able to transport to a dump.

I advertised a broken cooker, and a broken hutch - honestly and accurately, describing why items were broken. Both items were picked up by very happy new owners within a couple of days, who has the skills to fix the problem. Expection is that new owner sorts the transport!

I take it the new mattress came in a very large bag?

Use that to bag up your old one.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. After further thought, I've decided that if I roll the mattress (it's relatively thin) and secure it with string, it will fit into my car so I can take it to the tip.

Still advertise on freecycle stained or not

I just had a new mattress. The old one had very bad sweat staining as hubby just soaks the bed. However the mattress itself was a high quality one. One of the guys who delivered my new mattress checked with us it was just sweat staining and asked if he could have it. Result, one less mattress in landfill

I suppose there's no harm in sticking it on Freecycle and see if there are any takers. And if not, I still have my Plan B, so all good!

Definitely stick it on freecycle being honest about its state. May as well give someone the chance of using it. There will probably be someone in the area who really needs it for something. If they come and see that your house looks fairly clean, that would reassure them.

Apologies for bumping this thread up again, but thought I'd just update you... I put the bed frame and mattress on our local Weebay page on Facebook and within 5 minutes I got 8 requests for it, and within an hour of me posting it, someone came and collected it! Seems people don't mind a grubby mattress after all!

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions.
