Work Placement through Job Centre, questions?

My son has been told by the Job Centre after 3 months to undertake a work placement in a local Hotel cleaning rooms. He has been told that this will involve working 40 hours per week on a shift rota and he has to provide his own black trousers/black shirt/black socks and black shoes.

Can he get any form of reimbursement from the Job Centre for purchasing said clothing?

Correct me if I am wrong, but surely the Hotel will have to provide some sort of training on the use of COSHH, Manual Handling techniques, H&S and use of their equipment which he will then be expected to use, I would even go so far as saying, training in Needle Handling techniques. Also I guess they would have to provide some sort of PPE?

Christ who says slave labour isn't alive and well in this country.....I work that out at £1.43 per hour. Unbelievable!

  • i am currently on a work placement myself. Any clothing purchased and travel is reimbursed. I just bought some black shoes but i know someone who claimed £40 worth of clothes. At least he can get smart clothes that can be used in the future for free out of it.

Im a just working in a shop but i had an induction where they showed us the ropes , he will get information on what to do and i am sure relevant training.

I was also against this myself beforehand , i mean if they need work experience people why not create however many places as jobs instead. But what can you do. I am just glad i am only doing a part time placement just for a month.
Plus with me i had never worked properly so this is crucial training for some people. I know where i am working they have taken on some work placement people on at the end so it can happen.

Either way it keeps the job centre off your back for a few weeks.

  • He will be trained about COSHH and any CCP's in the building. It isn't exactly something that will take hours to explain. Hotel portering will do him good. There are always positions available in that department.

    He is cleaning the rooms.

A tad disappointed that this is the best the job centre can offer in terms of work placement, considering he has just finished his degree in Computer Science. Clerical work would have been more sufficient than this offering.

If he or I had known that 5 years ago, I am sure he would not have completed his A levels then chosen to go into debt at University. He could have signed on straight after school then waited 3 months for a "Personal Adviser" (I use that term loosely) to stick him on a bog cleaning placement which would do his long term career aspirations the world of good.

I shall tell him to ask the question of his "Personal Adviser" if he can claim the cost of clothing/transport back. Though if there as good as the work placements there dishing out then I wont hold my breath.

I understand his (and your) frustration, but at the very least he will prove his abilities in timekeeping, hard work, honesty, following instructions, general friendliness etc etc. If he can find a better source of employment for himself that would be wonderful - until then he just needs to accept every opportunity, however unlikely it may seem.

He has a degree in computer science and is unable to get work? He needs to look at working on a service desk or helpdesk say for an ISP entry level stuff. The pay is better and it becomes so easy you can focus on learning additional skills.

Surely he has black trousers, shoes etc for interviews? The only thing he might not have is a black shirt.

Do you use your interview gear when you are cleaning?

My next door neighbour has a first class degree in computer science and a Masters in computing; has a driving licence and a car; and lives within commuting distance of four cities. He stacking shelves at Morrisons. He has been for three years. The bubble has burst - there are few jobs in service desks or helpdesks at entry level. Maybe there are if you are lucky enough to live somewhere where there is entry level demand - there's none around here.
