Okay to make one-off purchase 3 months ahead of application?

Hiya,

I recently married my partner and we're looking to put my name on the mortgage and increase it in order to build an extension.

I'd like to spend £800 on a laptop, but we'll be going to the bank in approx 3 month's time to increase our mortgage from about 110k to 180k.

I'd be really grateful for some advise on whether this is a foolish thing to do timing-wise, if this kind of one-off expense can affect an application? I've the money in my account to cover it without going close to overdrawn and I can put it on my interest free credit card.

At the moment my credit card has £700 due on it, to increase to £1500 with the purchase of this laptop. I had planned to pay off £1000 this month and £500 next month, but I'm conscious it could make my recent bank statements look worse ahead of the application.

Would be really grateful for some advise please.

Cheers,

Cliff

I would make sure you pay off the credit card in full every month. If you can afford a new laptop on top of that without using credit then go ahead.

  • Wonderful, thank you. I'll mull it over a bit more and then buy the laptop on my debit card and then pay off the credit card in full. They won't care that a large chunk has come out of my bank balance?
