Mortgage ended, ppi still running?

I took out a mortgage with my now ex husband in 1990. This mortgage ended in 1997 when we moved house and took up another mortgage. I have been paying a small payment of £3.22 (currently) for what I thought was some life insurance thing, not really knowing where it came from ever since november 1990. It has suddenly dawned on me that this is payment protection from the above mortgage that we were told we had to have when we took out the mortgage. Can't believe I havent connected this before, but because it is so historic, (well the mortgage bit is) can I do anything about this? Who would be at fault here, the mortgage company or the ppi company? I have no record of mortgage details now but do have full policy info from the ppi company.
Any thoughts on this would be great please.

Possibly.
If its a lenders own product, then they will usually consider refunding premiums from when the mortgage ended providing that it would only have paid out if you had a mortgage with them.
if it would have paid out (on a claim) without the need for a mortgage then its unlikely a refund would be paid.Who would be at fault here, the mortgage company or the ppi company?
If its a bank own product, then most banks will tell you to review your insurances when you repay the mortgage. In rare cases, they will cancel a policy if its only linked to their mortgage. However, if can be used without a mortgage or can be linked to a mortgage of any lender then they will not cancel it in case you wish to continue using it (which is very common - people move their mortgages around but keep the same insurances running)
If it was set up via a broker then its fully your responsibility as the lender wouldnt know you had PPI and the PPI company wouldnt know you no longer had the mortgage.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Thanks dunstonh. I thought It may be my own fault for not realising amd cancelling it when the mortgage finished. The policy we were told was to cover the ammount that the mortgage was for, in case I guess we were unable to pay for some reason. Now that I have dug out some very old letters it seems it is indeed a 'life policy' to cover the £9,500 mortgage we had back in 1990. I'm guessing there is little point me continuing to pay this.
Thanks again for taking the time to give me your take on this.0 -

Correct. Its not PPI and life assurance can be used for any purpose and is not directly tied to a lender.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
