How Rude - Private number

Just a wee rant and hope it was a scam call and not a proper winning call.

Received a phone call last night from a private number so I answered asking who was calling. The guy said he couldn't tell me until I confirm who I was. As I recently had a few calls like this I refused saying unless he said who he was calling on behalf of then I would hang up. This I did.

How rude of someone to call my number and refusing to say who they were.

I am going with the notion of nothing lost as I am none the wiser if it was a competition win. Ach well

Give them a fake name next time and see if that happens to be the 'corresponding' name they 'have' for you. (I'd then be like "oh wow, I must be psychic!!" down the phone)

Just tell him you will check, then pause and say you have looked in the mirror and it is definitely you.
  • Have you tried Googling the number? I always do this and most often they are PPI or Accident Claim numbers.

  • I find it odd that even legit callers like the bank etc are not taught that it is good manners to introduce yourself first before asking for whoever you want to speak to. My husband has a real bee in his bonnet about it, especially as he often gets asked if he is Mr MyLastName as I didn't change my name on marriage. He often plays the "who's this?" game with them and they always hang up, if they would just tell him then he'd likely pass the phone over and let me deal with them!!

It was a private number so no number to google. I find it a bit silly really as yes it was my name he said but there is nothing for him to reconfirm it is me if I did say yes.

They are not being rude they are just following data protection rules. Even if they have your contact details the caller needs to confirm they are speaking to the correct person. All they should need is a name before identifying themselves if they have already been provided with your details.

I can understanding not giving away loads of details about yourself on the phone but your name isn't a problem. It used to be polite to answer the phone with your name after all.

I understand what you written but why not for him to say that instead of just going are you ?????????. And then not saying anything else. I think from my own personal view is that as we are now getting more random calls from people who obviously have our name and number for PPI and suchlike I find these calls rude as I don't want any of them.

I like to know who I am talking to before I confirm who I am or as someone else mention to pass the phone to the relevant person.

You did the right thing - I always ask 'who is calling please?' before I confirm my name. You never know who or what is calling you these days! green-alien-spaceship-smiley-emoticon.gif
