Denture's

Options
Hi, I recently had a full set of denture's fitted, but being my mouth was very sore after having the bottom teeth out its only now I have started wearing the bottom denture's.
The top denture's are fine but I find the bottom ones tend to move while trying to eat and while talking.
I realize it will take time for me to get used to them, but could anyone give me advice on the best thing to use to stop them from moving, my dentist said I need to learn how to control them with my tongue.
Now regarding the products on the market he said the bottom teeth are difficult to stick down because of the saliva produced in the mouth, so any tips please

    Hello Vivo

I am sorry to hear you haven't had a reply yet. Maybe it would be better posting on the Health & Beauty section? I cannot believe that you "have to use your tongue" to keep you new bottom denture in place! I am no expert, but find this advice ridiculous! As someone that in the near future will have to go through this......... I do so hope there is another solution. My heart goes out to you, and I do hope that someone like Mr Toothsmith will be able to advise you. Hugs;)

I'm afraid the advice isn't ridiculous at all. That's how it's done.

Upper dentures have a large surface area, and is nicely up and out of the way of all moving parts. You can get a bit of suction underneath them, and they hold up fine. If they do feel a bit slack, (And a new set shouldn't really) Then denture fixatives help a lot.

Bottom dentures are the spawn of Satan!

They only have a narrow little horseshoe of bone to sit on, there is the tongue waggling away on one side, and the cheek flapping about on the other. The bottom jaw is the moving one, as opposed to the top one being fixed.

Plus - if you've just had teeth out, then the fit surface will be changing quite rapidly, and this set can only really be considered as temporary, for a few months until the healing finishes.

It really is a case of muscle control to keep lower ones in place (Which is why the very elderly find it virtually impossible if they suffer strokes or suffer Parkinsons, or develop Altzheimers).

Until you develop the control, you will feel it will never happen, but persevere! Soon it will click into place, and you'll be fine.

The soreness should be checked though.

Waggling about is par for the course in the early days - pain should be looked at though.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

hello... i empathise hugely as i had all teeth removed recently & it does take some getting used to...i try to wear mine each day for a little while but always when i go out... the best fixative for me has been poligrip & i have tried as many as i have seen. the longer you wear them the more you become comefortable with them, try & wear them when you are busy when you have to concentrate or when you are doing 'stuff' that annoys or is irritating, so you don't concentrate on the mouth.i am slowly coming to terms with the fact that my mouth will never feel the same but then none of my body feels the same... how could it, life & years make a difference to all of us from birth... be positive & for me it was worth remembering that i am advantaged as far too many folk cannot afford new teeth.
