Recovering scan costs from NHS

Some 10 months or so ago, I damaged my knee whilst playing squash.
After 4 visits to my GP, private sports injury therapy and NHS physiotherapy, I decided to pay for an MRI scan to be done. My GP said that due to the fact that I could walk and wasn't in a lot of pain the NHS wouldn't fund a scan.
So today having seen the results of the scan, my GP tells me that I will need surgery to repair the damage. My question is:- Would I have a case in asking for the NHS to stump-up the cost of the scan that I had to pay for?
Any views or experiences?
