Skin sensitivity

So I have THE worst skin on the planet. Why? It's not problematic in a big way that'd get treatment - it gets spotty and irritated after shaving, I can't use any fragranced products, it's greasy as hell and just... urgh. No.

So once upon a time a doctor prescribed me Panoxyl alcohol based peroxide cream. Worked a charm (but changed the colour of everything I own).

Fast forward a few years and they no longer make it

Tried all the alternatives and they don't touch it. I don't use any 'products' because I can't.

So my question is this:

Does anyone know where I can get Panoxyl or something similar that's as strong? Alcohol based with Benzoyl Peroxide? I need something drying for my skin, and the world is obsessed with making it more moist! :rotfl:

Also, on a similar note: Anyone know what happened to Original Source shaving gel? It dissappeared and was supersmooth!
I can't add up.

  • Hi hun,

I have a nightmare with my face because I literally have perfect baby face skin. No wrinkles and it's really smooth (thanks to clinique since I was 13!) apart from my dreaded chin.

With good skin all over my face and a horrible horrible chin that breaks out about every three weeks - everytime I go to the doctors they tell me it's 'nothing' compared to 'real acne'.
Doesn't seem to be valid because the rest of my face is okay, but it personally makes me feel worse!

Because it's only a patch - I try not to over cleanse or scrub my face, so was looking for something STRONG.

    Found Duac once daily.

I got it from my GP and it must be kept in the fridge. At first I was wary as it didn't even seem to work (or dry out my skin like online reviews suggest) but now it is drying out my chin and (as you mentioned) seemingly bleacing my pyjama top lol!

    Good luck finding something

Is it water based or alcohol based? I prefer alcohol because the water based doesn't touch my problem haha

Yes. Duac bleaches everything it touches. I ended up getting white facecloths so as to avoid having to re-dye all my towels.

It's the benzoyl peroxide, you know.

I don't believe Original Source make the shaving gel anymore.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Have you tried consuming Pantothenic acid? It does dry the skin and can be quite effective at treating spots and greasy skin. Read up on it to see what you think ;) It might be better for you than using peroxides on your skin. That product was probably withdrawn for a reason ;)

I don't know if you've tried thinking about things differently OP but maybe if you do ever feel like your hitting your head against a proverbial brick wall, you could take a more holistic approach to your skin.

I come at things from a different angle; I have veeeery dry skin and if not careful I will end up with white patches, flaking skin and skin so tight it has been known to cause me an actual headache because it feels so tight. It has also cracked in the past which was sore and left me with red patches to go with the white patches....(dryer skin is just as bad as oily skin it would seem!)

I tried ploughing on creams and oils and whatever else but all it did was leave my skin looking dull, feeling stuffy and I always had this really dull greasy looking forehead. I also at times would still get white flakey patches which is why I started to look at things differently; obviously my skin wasn't able to hold on to the oils and my skin was still too dry despite what I was slathering on it several times a day. I hated the way my skin affected me and was worried it would get worse so I did a little research into what else could be the problem because moisturising skin products obviously weren't the reason.

The reason was because skin is not just affected by what you apply to it, it is also affected by many other things.
Your lifestyle is one (what 'you' (or your surroundings) do to your skin eg pollution, the weather, if you use hard or soft water, if you use certain products...etc)
What you put into your body is another; if your diet is malnourished, your body is going to cut back on where it spends its nutrients. Your skin is likely to be last on it's list if it has limited quantities of certain nutrients which your skin may benefit from if you were eating enough. So make sure your eating decent stuff and regularly (not a binge of decent stuff once a day/week, it needs to be little and often for the best effect or your body just gets worried and can't utilise the vitamins in the same way as if you consumed regularly)

Making sure you don't eat or consume too many things which can negatively affect you. And I really think there is far more to this than any of us are aware. The obvious skin-unfriendly things such as salt or e-numbers don't do skin any favours, but there are also many foods (and drinks!) which can affect our hormones and that can have a massive effect on our skin, I'd go as far to say that my theory is sugar is the worst due to the hormonal effects it can have on our bodies (my theory, not something a medic has told me, just my experience!)

One other thing to consider is that your body and skin will have some sort of equilibrium within itself. If you knock that by adding on various alcohols and so on, it will just try it's hardest to out-do this. If it's reacting to a product which is drying for example and it's just too drying for it, you may find it will product much more oil to combat the alcohol because it isn't happy with how drying the alcohol is. If you are treating your skin, do the least possible and see what happens, let your skin get used to what you try before adding more at a later date some days or weeks later. It is a tedious and frustrating approach but you have to remember just how sensitive skin is, it is sensitive for a reason; it is designed to fine tune our environment so our bodies can protect ourselves. It will just try to out-do you if you do not resolve the problem first; be it hormones or stress or whatever. And if you try to out-wit your skin with various products which are very harsh and your skin isn't used to them you are likely to get just as harsh a backlash at some point if you have not dealt with the original problems.

I've learned this (above) through trial and error and reading articles from skin professionals (dermatologists and skincare professionals). These things are things which apply to me and make sense to me and may not apply to everyone but seem to work for me and others I have spoken with about our skin. I'm not saying anything is a hard and fast rule, I am not a professional skincare consultant, but being that I've done the "add more product, and more product, and more...."etc and gotten nowhere fast, I would just suggest making trying to look at things from a different angle just in case you end up with a less expensive time-dependent routine which benefits more than just your skin!

I have very sensitive skin, easily irritated and dry but responds to dryness makes it greasy.

For my body I use palmers cocoa butter products, including the facial skin wash. for my face I use Liz Earle skin repair and skin polish which keeps the greasy patches under control. Yes it's expensive, but I don't get zits like i used to. I tried stopping it when skint but the zits come back and the skin gets uncomfortable, not found an equivalent budget range.
