Hi there
Can I join in please?!
We are nearly at the end of what feels like a very long journey, although really it's not that bad.
We started with a mortgage of £90,000 in 2001. Having got one child and another in 2007, paying off the mortgage early wasn't something I even thought about - nappies and milk was forefront in my mind for a number of years.
However, fast forward a couple of years and suddenly it became bit more of a 'lightbulb' moment. I can't remember exactly when, but the mortgage was at £40,000 and my husband would save up a chunk of money and pay off some of it. This time last year it was at £27,000 - somehow, now we are at £4,500. Over this last year it has become a bit of an obsession - every spare penny has gone towards it. I have taken on more work, which nearly drove me to insanity, but hopefully, on 1 January 2015 (or as close to) we should be mortgage free. It's become a complete challenge - even to the point where my Mum offered us £5,000 to cut my hours and contribute towards our quest - we actually turned it down (graciously) - it felt like running a marathon and someone giving you a piggy back for the last mile!
I don't feel like we live a frugal life - we've decorated one room complete with replastering, etc, however, we do only own one car and shop regularly at Aldi.
So there we have it - hopefully at the ages of 52 and 43 we can wave goodbye to the big 'M' word ... It's been a slog, but I'm looking forward to the big slap up meal in January to celebrate ..

Hi AlwaysThinking
Thank you for your kind words. It's not the most glamorous house - a bit old, cluttered and dusty, but it soon be ours and no one can take it away from us - the thought of being financially secure is great.
I wish you all the best in your journey too, I'm sure it will happen for you.0 -
Welcome and wow you have done amazingly! Good bit of inspiration! Just got the song 'its the final countdown...' in my head!
