gift voucher expiry?

Wonder if anyone can help? I have two book token cards gifted over 2 years ago!
WH Smiths say one is OK to use (National Book Tokens) but theirs isn't.
Both have same legal wording.. I assumed 24 months was from start of use, but neither actually say from when the 24 consecutive months of none use starts !
Any ideas of the legality of this system?
Interestingly I was pleasantly surprised to be able to use £4 of credit left on a Boots card.. over 4 years since it was last used!

Delighted to say that upon emailing WH Smith, they sent me a new voucher for the same amount as the original.
Faith restored!
