making money from YouTube

OK, lets just assume that I have a great idea for a You Tube channel (I think I do). People will love it.

I've tried looking on the YouTube guidance pages but trying to find out how likely I am to make money on it (or how much) seems to be impossible.

Now, I realise it's not the viewers that pay me - it's the advertising that I might be able to attract. And I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question - but just to get me started, does anyone on here have a YouTube channel, and if you do - how many viewers do you get and how much does it pay? Is there any way of finding out if, say, I got 1000 hits, how much that would pay?

I just want to get a feel for whether it's worth the effort.

  • 1000 hits is nothing in the world of YouTube.

When you create a YouTube account, there is an option in the account settings where you can 'monetise' it.

The money comes from the adverts that you see on videos. If you choose not to monetise, there won't be any adverts.

If you want to make any sort of money, you will ideally want views in the 100,000+ mark with thousands of subscribers.

If it's a great idea which no-one else has done and there is potential for a big audience, go for it.

1,000 hits isn't very many, many music tracks get millions.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • OK, are you saying I would need 100,000 to make any money at all?

I'm trying to see if I can find out how many hits/users/subscribers I would need before I can make any money at it. I can then decide if I think I stand a chance of getting that many.

There's no point in me doing it if it doesn't stand a cat in hell's chance. Give me something to go on please!!!

  • I have one video currently at 12,301 views and I have made $6.63 from having it monetised, my next viewed one is at 9,337 views and $2.66 both hit YouTube at the right time when the subject was trending (BabyMetal) so it was a very searched for topic BUT I don't promote my channel, it's my personal channel full of random stuff (not focused on making money).

I have a youtube channel where i do tech reviews and tutorials that gets about 1000 hits per day and for that i make about £2.

You need to get to 60 quid before a payout.

I have a youtube channel where I upload videos of hotels and places when I go on holiday. Had it a couple years and just letting it build up, think I'll finally hit £60 next year. It's easy to do the videos and upload them and then I just let them make money themselves!
  • Very interesting - the number of viewings isn't as high as I thought it might need to be.

I understand (from reading YouTube guidelines) that it isn't the number of hits per se, but the number of ads that the viewers watch that makes the difference.

I think the only way to find out for sure if it's going to be successful is to do it.

  • I had a Youtube account at CPM(how much you get paid per 1000 views) are going down at the moment. I had about £80 payed out over about 3 years and not the sort of thing you should be going in to make money cause you won't. Likely lose money from the time you have to put into it.

CPM also change so its depending on view reticulation, % of your views who last though the video.

As i said don't go in it for the money. For reference i am with a Multi-Channel Network.
