So having made the decision to use an independent mortgage broker, what should i look for when choosing one? I'm thinking qualifications, affiliations etc...
And as important when might i choose to avoid a particular broker?

Assuming a broker is FCA directly regulated or an Appointed Representative of an FCA authorised firm or network, we all have to be CeMAP or equivalent qualified as a minimum.

Ask friends or relatives for a recommendation. Failing that try https://www.unbiased.co.uk switching off the "sponsored ads only" option so you get a full list for your area. Have a ring around, see who you like and who you don't.

You're looking for those who operate from the whole market for broker products and you will have to research direct-only lenders yourself.

If paying a large enough fee, a broker may advise on direct lenders but you won't get the "arrangement" part of advice and arrange, as the lender won't accept the business from a third party.
