Help with buying wine from Lidi

Options
I would like to buy some great white, red wine and bubbles for Christmas. Working on a budget could I please ask for some advise on the best wine to buy please? I usually like a merlot for red and a crisp sauvignon for a white wine, but seriously I am not expert! I would love some advise from others please.

  • Lidl prosecco (Italian fizzy white wine) is very nice at £5.39 a bottle. Trouble is that it's not always in stock.

If you drink wine routinely, you could buy a bottle to try before Christmas and buy more if you like it? Are you catering for a group? Unless there are any wine experts/snobs, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I think one advantage of Lidl (or Aldi) is that there is limited choice and most things are decent quality and decent price, so you can just buy what they have without having to think or stress about it too much. Makes life much simpler than going to a massive Tesco or Asda with ten times more products, half of which are rubbish and/or over priced. Do you definitely want to use Lidl, or are you looking for recommendations from other shops?

I know you say Lidl, but I got some Viho Verde? from Aldi for £4.89. It was a portuguese white with a very slight fizz and it was lovely. Aldi's champagne at £12 (their prosecco is too, same price as lidl) is at least as good as any of the other supermarket or cheaper mass market brands that are usually more expensive. I don't normally drink red, but Aldi do a Spanish red called Toro Loco for about £3.69 that is raved about on here and other places. I don't know if Lidl do something similar.

Id go to Tescos they have 25% off 4 bottles at the moment.
Aldi & Lidl wine is nasty - I know some people rave about it, but urgh, Ive never tasted a nice red from either yet.
IMHO for cheap & cheerful you can't really go wrong with Hardys, or if you have a costco card, they have Barefoot Merlot for about £28 for 6 bottles (its about £7.85 in the supermarkets) its deeelish!
Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right
  • My favourite red wine is from lidl and its an Australian cabernet sauvignon (got yellow on the label) Its £4.49 a bottle and i really like it.
White wine i think its called Pedro Jimenez??? and thats quite nice and similar priced to the red.
They also do a rose zinfandel wine which i think tastes lovely.
I've yet to find a nice wine in Aldi yet.........but still looking
  • Lidl Prosecco is delicious, I'll be buying a few bottles for Christmas.

Go and buy a bottle of odd ones, see what you like.

I bought a white, which looked good sounded good, and it had such a
strong taste that I couldn't put a name to, I really didn't want to try it again...

And !!!!!! me, I can't remember the name of it so keep notes.......

  • I would definitely recommend Kooliburra Shiraz from Aldi. For £3.99 it's a great wine and always flies off the shelves as soon as it gets in my local Aldi. I do work for a major wine retailer so I know a bit about wine, but at the minute I'm on maternity leave so I can't afford to buy wine from my work lol (although I do get discount). I have only tried the Shiraz and Cabernet sauvignon and I prefer the shiraz, but cab sav is not bad either.

Firstly I'm not wine expert, and everyone likes different things anyway.

The Cimarosa Chilean Merlot at £3.99 from lidl is, I think, very acceptable. It's very hit of miss though, I had a bottle of Cimarosa Cabernet Sauvignon, and it's still sitting half finished. I can't bring myself to tip it down the sink, but equally can't really drink more than half a glass at a time... It's really not good ( I do think sometimes you just get a bad bottle though, I'd read positive things about it before I bought it)

I'd be tempted to say that you are probably going to be less likely to get a bad bottle from Aldi. The Toscana Rosso is very nice at £4.49. Even their Grapevine Merlot at £3.29 is very acceptable in my opinion.

Since I know next to nothing about wine, www.supermarketwine.com. which I find very useful for making it slightly less of a guessing game and also being able to read reviews and find bottles for the price you want to pay. Tonight I have gone for the Koru New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc at £5 from Asda
