How can I build a credit history before applying for mortgage?

I have a clean credit history and is planning to a buy house in couple of years. When I pulled my credit history from experian it had only one negative point. ie. Lack of prior credit history.
I have 2 credit cards which I have been paying off in time for the last 4 years. Looks like that is not enough. What is the best way to build a credit history?
Two options I can think of.
1. Take some personal loan from the bank and pay back in 6 months.
2. Buy furniture on financing and pay back in 6 - 12 months.
I do not want to buy an automobile.
The loans in both cases would be for a smallish amount 1000 - 2000 pounds. So I do not expect any issues with getting approval with my current salary levels.
Any advice regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Are the two credit cards appearing on your credit report okay then?
What are the credit limits and how much do you spend on them?
What experian say doesn't really mean anything, they won't be making the mortgage decisions.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
