I've asked for this thread to be moved to Green & Ethical ...
We've seen the potential costs of climate change around the world - increased prevalence of droughts, hurricanes and now the devastating floods on our own islands are going to cost £millions/billions.
"What can we do? The UK needs to show leadership in tackling climate change. We believe a strong Climate change Law is the best way of doing this.
The law would make the Government cut the amount of carbon dioxide released in the UK by three per cent year on year. It’s a steady path that will show the world the way while giving us all time to adjust."

You can either upload a video of yourself supporting the campaign, or just send an automatic email to your MP via the web form.
If you disagree that man-made climate change is happening, or that we can make a difference individually, please feel free to chip in. Having said that, I would like this thread to stay civilised and grown-up (this is a big ask in itself) and whilst I'm not one for reporting abuse, I will if it appears on this thread.

As i have said many times I have been involved in various environmental projects for almost two decades now. I used to believe that the big impact was 'man' but to be honest since the turn of the century I have been less sure ... I now wonder if we may be flattering ourselves in the face of mother nature.squirreltufty wrote: »If you disagree that man-made climate change is happening, or that we can make a difference individually, please feel free to chip in.
On the other hand though I do not think that it absolves each and every one of us from our responsibilities to others on this planet and to future generations. At the minute there is a lot of what I think is over sensationalised paranoia ... however I think much of it is because to actually do something the governments need money (and large amounts of it) and need to change the stubborn wasteful attitude ingrained into a couple of generations ... this may allow us to reverse the damage that our generation may be responsibile for.
While not knowing what the underlying cause may be I would prefer to see us hedging our bets and cleaning up the environment ... at least then the worst that will happen is that our children have some resource available, clean air to breathe and less waste to deal with ... the alternaitve is that we continue to examine the insides of our own rectums and deplete the worlds resources, irreversibly contaminate the atmosphere and run out of space to dump our garbage.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I dont think man has anything much to do with climate change. The planet has gone through several cycles over the years and we are just on one thats getting hotter. Another Ice age will probably come soon. There is still the sme amount of carbon on the planet its just man takes it out of the earth and puts it in the air where the plants absorb it or the rain dissloves it and brings it back again.Who I am is not important. What I do is.0

Yes, at the very least, let's hedge our bets.:beer:still a SF nerd no.1:o

Yes, as far as I'm aware, there is the same amount of carbon (the element), but the point is that more of it is in the form of carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gases) which has been released by our combustion of stuff that's been buried deep underground and would have stayed there otherwise.still a SF nerd no.1:o

A slow pace of change is necessary, Squirrel, to protect existing investment.
Gonna get worse anyway, with China and India not yet in full smog mode.0 -
I'm not swallowing your propaganda, squirrel. What that webiste is asking seems like head-in-the-clouds thinking. It makes me laugh how we are all told to be so afraid of terrorists and forget that mother nature will disrupt the country unlike anything a human can do (RE the floods). Now we are faced with a bill of around £5 billion quid- about what we are going to spend of 2 new navy boats0
