Thanks for your help. The deceased brother has 4 remaining siblings. None of them on benefits. 2 have just the normal old age pension, one has no money at all, and we have a small amount of savings. So unless we just walk away, and my husband says he can't do that, then we just have to pay up. Like I said, we have daughters at uni ( very expensive ) and this is the third time in 8 years that we have had to pay for a relatives funeral. It seems so very unfair.0 -

Ljs, so sorry to hear about the bereavement and unpleasant financial angles to it.
Have you thought about donating his body for medical science? It wouldn't help discover a cure for AIDS or cancer necessarily, but it would help train the next generation of surgeons. It would solve the issue of the funeral and give his death some purpose and dignity. More information here;

Nice idea but followed that link and it said this...
There are strict laws governing body donation. In the 1990's medical schools accepted very few bodies without the personal request of the donor. Since 2000, no bodies have been accepted unless the donor has asked for this.
Also I think OP said he was alcholic not sure if bodies have to be "perfect"
It is an idea we should think about generally though I guess.0 -

Went on the Human Tissue Authority site and it does stipulate you have to organise it before your death. But really is an idea worth considering something I had totally forgotten about!0
