Combi microwave issues

I bought one of these recently to replace my microwave that had given up, I thought it would save me using the big oven just for myself. However, I find I am now just using the microwave part and using my big oven like before. I cooked something in the combi oven part and it didn't taste the same as in the big oven so I gave it up as a bad job. I would like to use the oven part, I could have saved money otherwise and just bought a basic microwave. Is there something I am missing or doing wrong with it?

Tbh we had a combi oven and it was such a flaff that I rarely used it as an oven, preferring to use the top oven
  • I've had nothing but combi ovens for a very long time; I don't have another oven (only 2 to cook for) so they've been used for everything. The most important thing, I'd say, is to read the manual for your model. Take their suggested settings (and recipes, if you're lucky) as a kick-off point and adjust them depending on how you like the results.

For example; baked potatoes. You have various options. You can just microwave them (ugh), just bake them (nice but takes too long/is wasteful) or use combination settings, which gives an in-between result. The skins aren't as crisp as oven-baked, but not soggy like microwaved spuds. My model has auto settings for baked spuds. but they're still a bit too "microwavy" for me. So I cook for a higher weight (so the skins are a bit crispier) and give a bit of grill at the end.

What exactly did you cook and why did you not like the result?

I use my combi oven quite frequently. If there's only one dish it makes much more sense to use it rather than the big oven. If I'm cooking loads of different stuff I still use the big oven.

If the big oven packs up I'd be quite happy to use the combi for a while.

As previously asked, what did you cook that you didn't like?

  • I have had a Panasonic combi for many years now and although I have a standard fan oven as well, I rarely use it - probably twice a year. The range of functions on the combi is quite baffling and I have never tried all of them. I rarely use the microwave on its own although I did when the family were at home. It's a very flexible bit of kit and I would definitely replace it if it expired.

  • I too have had a Panasonic Microwave for a number of years, I actually did not have an oven for 2 years at one point. Cooked on a 2 ring electric hob and used the Combi.

I have only used my present oven once since we moved in and that was to bake a victoria sponge in 2 tins.

I would be quite happy to loose the oven and just use the gas hob and my combi.
  • Thanks for all your replies. I have only cooked fishcakes in the oven part so far but they tasted really rubbery and the problem I also have is when I cook something in the oven part and then something else in the microwave, how do I keep the stuff warm that is done first. I did some fishcakes in the oven part, took them out to put the steamed veg in the microwave and the fishcakes went cold. I also worry about stuff not being cooked properly as it doesn't seem to preheat like a normal oven.
