Hi OP, just an idea..... could you not get a job for the moment and try the detailing side of things during evenings / weekends for friends and friends of friends, without the van? Then you can get a feel for the market, your skills, and also get some cash saved up towards a van, if you think it will be worth it?

I'm want to get into the "detailing" side of things.. I am also going to attend a course which specialises in this. What I want to be doing isn't necessarily just a "car wash" the reason your local valeter makes £75 a day is because he probably hasn't been and isn't investing enough time into how he would expand his clientele list.. You will succeed I'm anything you're passionate about and out your heart into.

And lastly, people who have the luxurious advantage of pushing around a half a million pound set of wheels isn't going to be attending the "excellent polish lads" anytime soon...firstly because they usually don't have the time and secondly because those "lads" are the sort that are known to spray wd40 grease on the accelerator and brake pedals to make them "nice and shiny" and I'm sure you can imagine what happens next..catch my drift?

Thanks for the helpful answers by other posters..

Ok so you're going to attend a course. More outlay! Needs to be factored into your business plan, as does the time spent where you won't be earning. I agree you are talking about a slightly different end of the market, but I have seen both Rolls Royce and Bentleys in the drive through that I use - people like them as they are so quick and efficient! And I've never seen them use anything like WD40 as part of their cleaning regime either - everything they do is very open, you can sit in the waiting room while they do the interior or stand and watch.

I do feel that you are rejecting anything you don't want to hear - as per your last sentence, you don't consider anything that I said to be 'helpful'. By helpful, you mean anything that doesn't challenge what you are intending to do - which is the surest way for your business to go down the pan! Let me ask you - how many multi-million pound cars are in your area, how many are corporately owned and how many privately, how many have staff who would normally valet their cars and how many outsource? How many would consider changing what they do now and how many would never change?

This is what you need to find out, because without that sort of info you are going into a business you know nothing about!

My target audience won't be 'multi million pound cars' as there isn't enough of them in the world let alone where I live.. Please think before you speak.

As for 'more outlay' the course is £159 and my friend said he will pay for this.

This isn't a business I know nothing about, I have previous experience and contacts in the field.

The moral of the story is this.. People are telling me what I've either heard or know. Living with all this isn't easy so I would appreciate people who are truly trying to help, and that's only happened a couple of times by posters on this thread.

My credit score is low, and I do have a business idea as mentioned, if anybody can help please let me know or inbox me. Thank you...
  • Not to mention the fact that I'm a very hard working person...

Hi OP with the greatest respect you've alreay received plenty of useful, practical and realistic advice on this thread, but it looks like you just want to keep asking for the opinions of others until you hear something more appealing!

Any business is a risk, a profit is never guaranteed. Getting into a reasonably large amount of debt on the back of this business plan, is a risk and not a very wise one at this point in time, based on what you've told us.

Of course no one is saying don't do it, ambition is a goog thing, but so is realism. Being a hard worker doesn't guarantee your business idea will make you rich, unfortunately.

As already suggested, would it not be a better idea to look for a job with a guaranteed income, and start your business off small, doing jobs for friends and family, and hopefully build it up from there? Do you really NEED a van to start off? I doubt it.

If you go by this route then you will have some time to build your credit rating, your reputation (the important part!) and if you find you are in a position to expand then a bank will be much more likely to offer you a loan to expand your existing business...... It may not be your ideal plan at the moment, but it seems the most sensible.

There may be lots of excellent advice but it's of no use to the OP.....as it's not telling him what he wants to hear.

Have you written a business plan? You have only mentioned that you need money for a van, but you have made no mention of how much you feel you need for marketing, supplies, fuel, to say nothing of your wages, insuranc, and so on.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to be self employed, but trying to do without planning and some money behind you to start you off is foolish, and you will only compound your fathers mistakes with more debt.

Unfortunately, without an income you won't get a loan, so I would advise you to find a job within the industry that you want to run your business. Get some money behind you, learn all aspects of the business, including behind the scenes paperwork and administration. Only then will you be on a better footing to do this.
