turn based games have taken over the fantasy genre?

I'm browsing steam after a friend recommended it to me, have to say huge opportunities for massive bargains, but what i want to talk about is modern fantasy rpg's.
I like real time multi-party strategy rpg's, baldur's gate series being the pinnacle for me, but browsing modern games it seems like turn based mechanics are more popular in team games which takes away from the real time strategy imo.
I like turn based back in the day but they were mostly games like final fantasy etc. with a more anime leaning.
Anyway I just think it's a bit sad that the only modern games in this genre are watered down barely baldur's gate spin offs like neverwinter nights and dragon age which i thought were extremely weak.
It seems like turn based models are dominating rpg games now and the rest of the games are single person [none of the strategy you get from controlling a group.]
What are peoples thoughts. The turn based strategy games seem really popular but then again dragon age got rave reviews and I thought it was very lacklustre.
I'm looking at a bit of fun with the Overlord games to plug the gap atm.

I hear good things about Divinity: Original Sin.
I quite liked the combat system in FFXIII, but it was a shame it was hobbled by the first eighteen hours being a corridor... and that story. Still, it's not as bad as some people might think - and it recently popped up on Steam. (Wait for January and it should be bundled with both of its sequels at a decent price.)Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.
Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
XCom is a turn-based RPG (sort of).
Not fantasy, but it has a great system and a cracking story.0 -
Neverwinter nights and dragon age being poor? You must have amazingly high standards - I thought both were excellent games and far prefer NWN to BG which, whilst groundbreaking, was clunky and is now very dated. BG2 was, in my opinion, the absolute pinnacle of these type of games and had it all and was miles better than BG! I replayed it a year or two back and it felt like it has lost nothing.
If you've not played it give Planescape Torment a go.
I agree with your sentiments though, very poor choice nowadays for fans of that quite specific and very appealing genre.Thinking critically since 1996....0
