Defra Approved

Hello all,
My wife keeps nagging for a log burner, but with all the work we or doing to our house at the moment im not sure we can stretch to it.
I have read quite a few threads and the general opinion is to stay away from cheap stoves. We have seen a stove that is £400 (Which i personally don't consider to be cheap), but we can't find any reviews from owners, which i thought was a little odd.
Website is
woodburningstovesdirect
model is saltfire st2
(cant post direct link as i am a new user)
The question i really want to ask is, if a stove is being sold as Defra approved, does this mean that Defra itself has done some testing on this model of stove and would this means that it meets CE/BS??
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Have a look here .... https://www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules ... you should be able to find whether you need an exempt appliance and then be able to check whether the make/model you're looking at is on the exempt list ...
Regarding DEFRA testing, it's down to the manufacturer to have the stove tested and certified in an approved independent facility and then apply to have an exemption certificate and be entered onto the exempt database .... information here ... https://www.gov.uk/get-an-exemption-for-an-appliance-to-burn-unauthorised-fuel

Hi
Just had a look at the details of the stove you mentioned ..... I've not seen one, but suggest you have a look around at other makes to get an idea of what finishes & quality is out there, then go an have a look at one of these to compare.
Realistically, the cost of the stove is just the beginning as you'll need it to be professionally installed, have the chimney lined, possibly hearth extended, etc ... so you're probably looking at well over double, possibly tripple the cost of the stove on top, so make sure that you're buying something which will last, preferably from an established manufacturer/brand (spares etc) ...
Our Stove is an 8kW.t Clearview, which after 20 years still looks like new, but then again it weighs in at almost 3x heavier than the one you're looking at and cost considerably more than £400 then .... I know a few people who have replaced their stoves a couple of times before finally investing in something which has been engineered to survive the test of time .... not saying that the one you're looking at isn't, just recommending that you don't make a decision to purchase 'on-line' without having seen, and more importantly 'touched', one (make sure it cold though) ....

yes i have been doing a lot of reading regarding the regs of an install and was going to do it my self, however my local council wanted an extortionate amount to certify it. And i understand what you mean about standing up to the test of time, however it wont be for everyday use, more likely just the weekends when cold.
Im am just in the process of ripping out the old fire now then will get it swept and tested to see if it requires a flue, if not the maybe able spend more on the stove.
Thanks for your help0 -
