The scenario you have outlined applies to me - I did make payments (12-16?) around a decade ago, when my salary exceeded and was happy to do so. I now have a few months remaining until they have to write me off. I am not in arrears and I am keeping a very watchful eye on things in case they should suddenly decide they have a reason not to fulfil their legal obligation.
Yes if you have just a few months to the write off then they probably realise they can't get away with trying to con you into paying it all back in such a short time, so they are doing the calculation correctly.
Or in your case you should go through the write off OK I hope as trying to deny it would be too obvious a fiddle on their part.
edited as I mixed you up with Student1983Still rolling rolling rolling......<

They're trying this one on with me too getting the repayment down from 5 years to 4 as far as I can tell. Although with typical ar5e about face, my annual statement letter clearly says Min Payment Term (Months) 60 and the statement itself 'The number of monthly repayments is 60 if you have 5 or fewer student loans etc.'
I'm going to ask them to show where in the t&c it allows them to vary the repayment period....0
