Building Society mortgates

I am looking at mortgages, i have a good credit profile.

It seems that all the good rates are with building societies, are they difficult to get a mortgage with them? if not, why is everyone not using them

P.S i did get a mortgage in the past with HSBC who are know for being quite conservative.

I would say about 50-60% of the business I place is with building societies.

If anything I actually find them great to deal with as they are smaller. Less chance of things getting lost between departments, pople are more likely to know one another etc and you can usually speak to the person you need to rather than a customer service bod who sends an email to someone on the other side of the world.

Many building societies converted into banks and subsequently disappeared for a variety of reasons. Last year Building Society lending rose while that of the banks fell. A trend that's bound to continue.
