Freezing shop bought birthday cake

My sister bought a cake from Mr T , heavily reduced as sell by was today ,it is all covered in icing and pink fairys. However, we are all out tonight so cake will not be touched. Is it safe to put into freezer and perhaps take out at weekend or later???

should be fine. the only thing is the colour in the icing may run when it is defrosting.

We froze iced fairy cakes for my daughter's wedding (they were going to be discontinued) and they were fine after 2 or 3 weeks. The baker said the worst we could expect would be a slight change in texture in the icing, but it wasn't obvious and nothing ran.

We froze a birthday cake for my dd last dec and the icing cracked a little. I covered the cracks with candles. It tasted lovely.

  • Spotted today on Asda whoops trolley a dalek cake down to £1.25p as the sell by date is today (best before 1st Dec). Can I freeze it until my sons b'day (3rd Jan) or should we eat it this weekend?

Its a "moist choclate sponge with a delicious chocolate buttercream filling covered with soft icing and an edible decoration"
The soft icing looks like fondant icing, & the decoration looks like the thick rice paper (more like card!) .

I'm concerned the decoration might go soggy & colours run &/or the fondant icing will go too sticky.

    Any info/advice gratefully received.

P.S, I know, I know, 1 baked from scratch would be cheaper & probably taste nicer but my sons a huge Dr Who fan & will appreciate this (plus £1.25 down from £7.38 isnt bad)

My son had one of these on his birthday - it was really nice actually. I wouldn't freeze it though. My concern would be when it was defrosting that the colours would run and icing go funny, as you say.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

I've frozen a similar cake with no problems.
Uncover it when you take it out the freezer and defrost in a cool dry place to avoid condensation making the icing wet - otherwise the colours might run.
Mine didn't - it was fine.

I have done this also, just be certain to remove any packaging so that it "air dries". I did have a little 'blip' towards the bottom of the cake, on the icing, where I had some trouble removing the plastic ring that was around it. Just fixed it when the icing was soft enough :D
  • Hi, just to let anyone whose interested know, I took the risk & froze the dalek cake. The night before DS1s birthday I took it out, removed all packaging & left on the worktop to defrost. In the morning it was fine, no icing had run, no change in colouring & that afternoon it tasted great :D

I bought an In the night garden cake yesterday that I spotted was reduced, its now in the freezer waiting for DS2s b'day at the end of next month.
