What is the difference between the two? Do you think I should ask again? How would I use the account if I have nothing to go into it?

Most Banks do a "basic no frills account", although they all have differing names for them.
A "basic bank account" is one anyone with the correct ID can open, with no credit checks, overdraught, or cheque book.
Some banks even give you a visa debt card, although some only provide a cash card.
As long as you have two forms of ID, inc photo ID, and proof of address, you will be accepted.
The Coop do a very good basic account with a visa debt card.
You need to ask for a basic account, with no OD, or you can apply for most of them online, although they will need to see your ID before the account can be opened.

You have to specifically ask for a basic account, it comes with a debit card usually, but had no overdraft or cheque book

If you want an absolutely basic account, try this.
