    These are for Automatic or Self Winding watches which normally rely on the the movement of your arm to wind the watch. If you don't want to wear the watch all the time to keep it wound, these winders are used to store the watch and keep it wound by rotating it to approximate the movement of an arm.
    I have to shake mine for quite a time if I've not worn it for a while so I would love one of these.

    These devices are essential if you are fortunate enough to own two (or even a collection of) automatic/kinetic watches.

    You should only use one if your watch has got a lot of complications like moon phases and annual calender, as they are hard to set.

    I would not use one on a 3 hand automatic watch as it will put more ware and tear on the movement and will mean you will need to service the watch more often.
