OK, this may be a stupid question but maybe one of you nice non-technophobes can help. I'm after an MP3 to use during the birth of my second child at the end of August. When my two year old was born we turned up at the hospital with a big CD / tape thing and various CDs and I'd like to use MP3 instead this time to avoid putting my husband's back out with the hospital bag! I was in the birthing suite for over 12 hours last time (total labour 31 hours, in hospital for 2 days), and from what I've read it seems a lot of these players don't have a great battery life and can only be recharged via USB(?). Cost is very much an issue, but I don't want something that runs down after a couple of hours and can't be re-juiced in hospital. I also need something that's fairly easy to get music onto, as my patience is a little limited these days... any ideas?

Go for the iriver T50. It gives 60 hrs battery life on 1 AA battery. It has 1GB memory. Or if you need more memory you can go for the T60 which uses AAA batteries meaning lesser life (I think it is about 20hrs on 1AAA battery). These are small. They are simple to use though I dont like the toblerone shape of these players...

I got a couple of 2Gb MP3 players from Aldi at £29.99 each. They have a rechargeable battery and lots of extras. I've been very pleased with it. I also saw they had an MP4 player for the same price but I haven't tried that out.

I have the 2Gb MP4 player, which was @ £27.99, there are a couple of little niggles with it...

    1. You have to change the type of drive to USB storage before it will work properly with windows.
    2. I then had to quick format the drive.
    3. I can't seem to find a 'shuffle' function, but if you bear this in mind when you create your playlists in WMP or whatever software you use it will play the tracks in the sequence you load them onto the player.
    4. I have a slight computability isssue with my PC, I keep being prompted to plug the player into a USB 2.0 port for better performance, as far as I am concerned the ports on the front of my PC are USB 2.0. I don't have the same problem with my Laptop of the PC at work.
    5. The interface is not the most intuitive in the world but then I guess you gets what you pays for...

Other than that for under £30 its a good little player. The sound quality is good, you can view your piccies & little movies, there is a voice recorder & FM radio as well.

  • The sound quality of the Matsui mp3 players is very good, especially if you stick on a set of decent headphones or run it through the auxiliary input of a hi-fi or car radio.

I've bought the 1gb and 2gb versions for presents and have the 4gb for myself (still under £30). I admit the menus are not intuitive, and the help is almost non-existant. With a bit of perseverence, though, you can get it sussed and play songs in any order you want. The lack of a fixed rechargeable battery is actually a bonus, as it means you're not dependent on having a PC handy to charge it up - very useful when you're on holiday. I just use rechargeable AAA batteries which are cheap to buy and cost next to nothing to run.

Another bit of general advice, regardless of which make you buy, is to avoid hard disk players if you want to listen to music while running or cycling. The constant shaking can damage the disk and make it unusable.
