A bit late in spotting this, but the first answer is wrong.
In the Original Friday the 13th film it was Jason's mum, Pamela Voorhees that was the killer. She was getting revenge on the Camp leaders for letting her son (Jason) drown, every subsequent Friday movie is Jason getting revenge for the camp leaders killing his mum at the end of the first movie.
