Has anybody here used "Depop" ?

I only just found depop yesterday and only have listed one item for sale.

Depop is a site with seems to be a merge of Instagram and Ebay / Etsy as you can sell/swap/negotiate on items that allows you to upload 4 photos , apparently, there are filters you can use to make your photos more appealing. It only charges 10% once an item is sold.

You can download on Google play or the apple app store for free.

I wanted to start selling some of my "old" clothes that I don't wear plus some artwork (eventually) and some of my crafts.

Just wondered if it was any good.

Also if i'm selling the majority of old clothes,
do I have to state i'm self-employed? I'm classed as self-employed as well as being employed because I have a retail job but i also work for a childcare agency as bank staff?

NEver heard of it but sounds a bit like Vinted.

I do sell my personal items on Ebay and don't have a regular income from it. Nor it is my job. So if I understand your question correctly, i don't think you need to tell anyone. However Ebay at some point only would let you list certain number of items every month. To list above this number, you'd need to register as business seller which would have tax implication.

Just to clarify. If you are selling your own unwanted clothes then you are a private seller and don't need to have a business account or tell HMRC. If however you buy clothes and resell them then you are trading and need to register as a business.

  • Clothes that still have wearable value. What about selling things like drawings or loom bands I don't want any money from them as an income, just to pay for materials? I'm not expecting to sell a lot I just need to create space

As soon as you make to sell, or buy to sell you are a business and need to e registered as such. However, being a business doesn't necessarily mean you will pay tax- you only pay tax if you make a profit after taking into account all your costs.

If you want to make room and sell your own unwanted items that you have hanging about then that would not make you a business.

As for making and selling loom band items or Drawings, I would strongly suggest you check out completed costs on places like eBay , some things just don't sell but finding that out might well cost you in terms of fees and suchlike.

What I said was about the need of registering as business seller with Ebay. It is different than private seller.

This might not be the case now as they changed the listing rules.

  • Depop isn't anything to do with ebay but its a site to buy/sell online?

and yes, I'll research some items and sell for cheapest but as affordable for myself as I can...since Depop charges for 10% of sold product and ofc, paypal fees.

If you are selling your own things then profit doesn't really come in to it, just make sure you cover your fees with a bit left over for yoruself. If you do decide to buy to resell then don't only allow for fees, but also take into account losses and returns. I build a small amount, it doesn't need to be huge, into everything I list for sale to cover me for things that get lost and things that buyers return and which cost me postage and other fees.

There are a number of sticky threads on the ebay board that cover sales using paypal- it is worth having a read so you know how to protect yourself.

Have a read of this one to start:

  • my son has an account with depop. He has had some success with selling some of his unwanted clothes, not sure of their fees but he says it's cheaper than ebay.
